Arts District

Barker Block

When Barker Brothers founder, O.T. Barker, surveyed the lands around the City of Angels back in 1880, all he saw was potential. At the time LA had around 11,000 residents and one furniture store. Barker set up his manufacturing plant, brining industry and commerce to the soon-to-be thriving city. The Barker Block on Hewitt St. is a complex of seven interconnecting buildings, each building representing a different era in LA’s vivid architectural history. Originally Barker’s manufacturing premises, its façade is clean and sleek, hallmarks of classic American design. There are 297 units, each one designed to facilitate work / live harmony in a brightly lit, spacious home. There’s a breathtaking rooftop deck with pool, spa and cabanas. There’s a state of the art fitness centre, outdoor living room and adjacent parking.

Biscuit Company Lofts

Once the head office for the National Biscuit Company, this landmark building was built in 1925. It was reformed in 2006 with the idea to convert it into homes. The result is a total of 104 single and multi-level units with spacious, open-plans, hardwood floors, exposed brickwork, high ceilings and flooded with light. Some units have private patios. There’s a garden pool, 24 hour security and on-site parking. This complex proves that old and new can merge, in this case, classical American architecture with modern urban design.

Molino Street Lofts

At the heart of LA’s urban reform are the Molino Street Lofts. The transformation of these warehouses into city lofts sparked a renaissance in the design of LA’s downtown residences. Designed with the creative entrepreneur in mind, these lofts are perfectly suited to those who work from home. There’s high speed Internet, cable TV, central heating and ventilation. Molino Street Lofts are just 3 stories high with a total of 91 units. Each unit features classical architectural details such as exposed brick, wood and polished floors, and multi-paned, tall windows. City dwellers looking for a more organic and communal living experience will feel especially at home here.

Toy Factory Lofts

Located on the southern edge of the Arts District and across the street from the Biscuit Company Lofts, these lofts represent the latest in modern LA downtown living. Originally built in 1924, the Toy Factory lofts were reformed in 2006 and were designed to create the perfect work/live spaces. There are 109 units, some of which have ceilings 20 ft high. With just seven stories, there’s a sundeck, rooftop pool, secure parking and 24 hour doorman. On the retail level, there are restaurants and boutique shops. This

living space is the ideal environment for any urban dwellers who like to mix business and pleasure.

MURA

Mura is Japanese village and that’s exactly what this modern design condominium complex is, a little oasis on the outskirts of the Arts District. The atmosphere here is part Little Tokyo, part Venice Beach. Just one block south of the Alameda, this complex is in one of the most coveted address in LA. The condos in this complex are sleek and stylishly designed with modern details such as granite kitchens and stainless steel appliances. The private outdoor patio has a swimming pool, barbeques, fireplace and stunning views. Mura has six floors and a total of 190 units, a mix of one to three bedroom residences. There’s also secure parking and most important of all, for all the fashionistas, it’s only minutes walk away from DASH.

2121 Lofts

Known as the friendliest loft living space in town, the 2121 Lofts is a creative community, located on Santa Fe and 7th Place. The original building was constructed in 1927 but was reformed in 2002. There are 56 units in total with 24 hour security. Some of the special features of the complex include a dog grooming parlour plus an off-the- leash park, a herb garden and a martini grove. There are landscaped gardens both inside and out, and a private party space. But part of the fun of living in this loft complex is enjoying the atmosphere outside on the street where the neighbours include a mix of artists, underground art galleries and designer label boutiques.
